About the Program:
Artist-in-Residence Debra Disman is back at the Northridge Branch for the year 2026-2027, beginning a series of monthly bookmaking programs in July, where you will learn to make a different book each session! No experience is required and there will be new projects and things to learn for those who have attended her workshops before. All are welcome and you can attend as many sessions as you want! All materials are provided. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

All the workshops are free including materials and for ALL AGES and ABILITIES!

Black White and Gray: an Achromatic Color Exhibit is an elegant show which includes exciting nature drawing, graphic form and a wide range of abstraction using only black, white and works in gray too.
Black and white sit on opposing ends of the grayscale. As with all achromatic colors, black lacks hue and absorbs all light wavelengths. White combines and reflects all visible wavelengths, so while it contains all colors, it is still perceived as lacking hue. The contrast between white and black is the greatest of any color combination, providing a bold and dramatic look.
Famous artworks using an achromatic color scheme—composed entirely of black, white, and grey—focus on form, contrast, and texture over color include Bridget Riley’s op-art piece “White Disks”, Kazimir Malevich’s “Black Square”, featuring a simple black square on a white background, Robert Motherwell’s “Elegy to the Spanish Republic” series, Vija Celmins’ gray-toned illustrations of oceans, deserts, and night skies, and Franz Kline’s large-scale, black-and-white abstract expressionist paintings, such as “Black, White, and Gray”. The artists in Black White & Gray: An Achromatic Color Exhibit present works in black, white and gray using their own monochromatic voice and vocabulary.In keeping with our love of music, “Black White & Gray: an Achromatic Color Exhibition” is dedicated to the song “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, an English singer, songwriter, and musician, a global phenomena, who blended jazz, soul, R&B into her music. Known for her distinctive contralto vocals, beehive hairstyle and tattoo’s, Amy won five Grammys and was the first British woman to do so. “Back to Black” is a critically acclaimed 2006 song detailing intense emotional turmoil, heartbreak, and despair following a breakup and reclaiming her power while singing it. We loved Amy and this song, as well as so many of her other songs.

“HOME v.2: Homeland” at the Georgia Center for the Book

 I am thrilled to participate in “HOME v.2: Homeland”, an exhibition pre­sent­ed by the Decatur Arts Alliance, the Decatur Land Trust, and the Geor­gia Cen­ter for the Book
in Decatur, Geor­gia
May 29 — July 18, 2026

The Decatur Arts Alliance and the Decatur Land Trust are partnering with the Decatur Library to present the second edition of powerful art show celebrating the multifaceted meaning of “Home.”

Artists working in an array of mediums lend their creative voices to this important cause.

The theme for “HOME v.2 2026” is “HOMELAND.”

“A person’s or a people’s native land, we look to explore “homeland” as a geographical point of origin and a state of being. Works should express cultural and ethnic elements, and elucidate the view of “home” from the immigrant to the expatriate, the displaced to the indigenous. How do we find “home” when we are away from the land of our forebears? What do newly arrived peoples do to preserve their culture and heritage? How do we honor and acknowledge the indigenous inhabitants of the lands upon which we all now live?

The exhibiting artists’ creativity illuminate the diverse ways we experience and define “home,” and their connection with a “HOMELAND.”

The HOME Exhibition is a multimedia showcase presented by the Decatur Arts Alliance in collaboration with the Decatur Land Trust and the Decatur branch of the Dekalb County Public Library. The exhibition will be shown in the Fourth Floor Gallery of the Decatur Library, home to the Georgia Center for the Book.

The show will run May 29 – July 17, 2026
An open­ing recep­tion will be held on Fri­day, May 29 from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

 

Making “Ralph Steadman-Inspired Books at TAM!

I was thrilled to lead a fun and fabulous bookmaking workshop on Saturday April 25th from 11AM to 3PM, leading participants in making their own one- of-a-kind artists’ book in conjunction with and response to the incredible Ralph Steadman show “And Another Thing”, currently at the beautiful Torrance Art Museum! (TAM)

MAIN GALLERY: Ralph Steadman: and Another Thing

“This traveling exhibition spans over 60 years of Ralph Steadman’s influential career, featuring more than 140 original artworks and ephemera, including sketchbooks, handwritten notes, and personal photographs. Steadman is best known for his long collaboration with Hunter S. Thompson, notably illustrating “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Their partnership helped define Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting that blends personal experience with political commentary. Coined by journalist Bill Cardoso, Gonzo’s impact is still felt today in online news, editorial pieces, social media, and political punditry.

The exhibition showcases his diverse body of work, from iconic illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” to collections like “The Gonzovation Trilogy,” created in collaboration with documentarian and filmmaker Ceri Levy to raise awareness about endangered species. Featured works include nine portraits of U.S. Presidents, over 20 images of famous people, including T.S. Eliot, Karl Marx, Virginia Woolf, and George Orwell, and “Vintage Dr. Gonzo,” a life-size bronze sculpture. This exhibition is organized by the Ralph Steadman Art Collection. Sponsored by United Therapeutics, Flying Dog, and Beta Technologies.”

Thanks to the exhibition curator and fearless leader Andrea Lee Harris, a force of nature, for making this happen!

We had folks of all ages “drop in” to the ongoing workshop, and learn how to put together exciting media to create personal accordion, folded fan and flower-fold books!


Samples help attendees understand the book structures and visualize what they want to do.
