“We Write the Book” FOLD-GLUE-SEW Bookmaking at the Northridge Public Library!

I am thrilled to serve again as a 2026-27 “NEAR” (Neighborhood Engagement Artist Residency) Artist in Residence at the Northridge Branch Library supported by our very own Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs!

 

For our third workshop in our “WE WRITE THE BOOK” series our participants learned to combine the techniques and processes of folding, gluing and sewing, to create accordion fold books with signatures, or gatherings of folded pages, sewn into them!
Children, adults, parents, families and individuals went to town on this folded, glued, sewn and very  versatile kinetic structure!

Free to the public including all materials. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Artist-in-Residence Debra Disman is back at the Northridge Branch for the year 2026-2027, beginning a series of monthly bookmaking programs in July, where you will learn to make a different book each session! No experience is required and there will be new projects and things to learn for those who have attended her workshops before. All are welcome and you can attend as many sessions as you want! All materials are provided. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Adult Art Class: Unfolding Possibilities in Bookmaking

Fold, glue, design, and collage as you learn to create a “folded fan” book, which consists of an accordion-folded spine, covers, and pages that unfold. We’ll find inspiration in the museum galleries to develop your own unique artist’s book and motivate your continued unfolding possibilities. Taught by artist Debra Disman.

This program takes place outdoors on Saturday, September 19. Parking validation and supplies are provided. Please note parking validations are only valid for the Pritzker Parking Garage on 6th Street.

Full refunds will only be granted if the art class is canceled by LACMA. Please notify us immediately if a student is unable to attend so that another student on our waiting list can attend class. A refund equal to half of tuition paid will be granted for cancellations made three weeks before class start date. No refunds for cancellations made less than three weeks prior to class start date. Art class tickets are not transferable to other classes.
