Join us to Make Books at the Canoga Park Branch Library!

December 4, 2023 By Debra Disman

Join us to create a beautiful and fun holiday book based on the closed spine accordion structure!

Learn the accordion fold, add covers and “close” the spine so that the book can both open in pages, or extend into a sculptural form.

This workshop is part of my Artist residency: “We Write the Book”, held at the Canoga Park Branch Library, supported by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs!

Getting Ready for the Holidays at the Canoga Branch Library!

November 24, 2023 By Debra Disman

Book arts are alive and well at the Canoga Park Branch Library!

I am thrilled to continue my artist residency there, working with the community, teaching bookmaking workshops (or leading “programs” in library parlance!)

The series, entitled “We Write the Book”, supported by the wonderful Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, will offer 11 hands-on bookmaking workshops and a culmination event to the community free of charge, with all materials included!

On November 18th community participants gathered to create a recipe book for the holidays and beyond. They learned how to sew a single signature (gathering of folded pages) together using the three hole  pamphlet stitch, then had the option of adding envelopes to hold treasured recipes! Decorative papers, fabric trims, stickers, markers, postcards and more were also available to use as embellishment and development of their book works.

Participants across generations created beautiful and fun books, with encouragement to keep working on them over time, and adding more recipes!

Seeing 2020: Making a Calendar at the Granada Hills Library Part II

February 2, 2020 By Debra Disman

As part of my Artist Residency at the Granada Hills Branch Library supported by the wonderful Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs,  we welcomed a new year and new decade with a calendar-making program!
Using an Asian-style side stab binding stitch, participants sewed their calendar pages between a front cover made of watercolor paper to allow it to bend, and thus open, and  a back cover made of board, to keep the calendar pages from bending.
Once they had completed the labor of putting the pieces together, the proud makers proceeded to embellish their creations with zeal!

Teen Council members served as assistants, and participants! We were so lucky to have them.

In a digitized world, working with our hands becomes even more precious.
Mom looks on….
.
Mom participates!
Grandma gets into the act!
A family of sisters.
A family of makers.

Caring and devoted Children’s Librarian Stephanie encourages a happy family to proudly share their calendars with the camera.
2020 is off to a good start.
Happy New Decade!
