ARTWORKS Center For COntemporary Art

Art Centers and the Like: The HeART of Art

September 2, 2024 By Debra Disman

Art and Cultural Centers are amazing places.

They are CENTERS. Centers of art and culture to be sure, but also centers of learning, personal and collective growth, education, care, community, cooperation and love.

Amazing to show in, but especially amazing in the services they provide, the opportunities they offer and the roles they play for their near and far communities.

I am going to explore these worthy and precious resources and entities in the next few posts, but firstly, I need to get my arms around them in a big, collective heARTfelt hug!

I will add to, or write further interactions of this post over time.  I would also like to write about Libraries, College and University Art Galleries and smaller galleries as exhibition spaces and hubs of community and world culture.

These are the art and cultural centers I have shown in over the last few years, essentially since 2018:
(I included some very special organizations such as Blue Roof Studios, Shoebox Arts and ArtShare LA in Los Angeles, CA, “We Are The Arts”/The Arts Council of Fayetteville|Cumberland County in Fayetteville, NC, the Hera Educational Foundation and Gallery in Wakefield RI, and the Springfield Art Association, in Springfield, IL, even though they don’t have the word “CENTER” in their monikers, as I believe they serve many of the same heART-FULL functions as those that do.)

EXHIBITIONISTA: “ENGULFED” at Artworks Center For Contemporary Art

June 26, 2023 By Debra Disman

I am delighted to participate in:

ENGULFED

 An International Group Exhibition
Opening: July 14th, 6-9pm – September 30th

An exhibition shedding light on the crisis of forest fires across the globe. Artists respond to the forest fires by developing work that focuses on global warming, resource destruction, property damage, loss of life, wilderness protection, sustainability, political issues, fire mitigation, first responders, or broadly conceptual work dealing with the interpretation of “engulfed”.

Juried by:
Executive Artworks Center for Contemporary Art Director and Curator Sarah LaBarre:

Sarah Elizabeth LaBarre has over 14 years of administrative and curatorial experience in non-profit arts organizations. She believes that art has the capability of transforming lives and is especially interested in points of connection between artists and the communities they live in. She holds an MFA in fibers from Colorado State University, a post-baccalaureate in fibers from Oregon College of Art and Craft, and a BFA in ceramics from the University of Arts in Philadelphia. Among other artist accomplishments, Sarah’s work is in the permanent collection of the Denver Art Museum.

“Burning Bush” is a sculptural Artists’ Book made of board, mulberry paper, sewing thread, linen thread and dental floss. It stands upright on a pedestal, shelf, table or other surface parallel to the floor. When opened, it can span up to 11″ wide.

A Material Identity

November 22, 2020 By Debra Disman

“Material Identity” was an exciting show presented by the Loveland Center for Contemporary Art, Loveland, CO

I was honored to exhibit two works in the show.

The show asks the question:

“How does materiality represent who we are? Does the material you use dictate who you are as a maker? How does medium speak to who you are as an individual?”

In the exhibition Material Identity, 27 artists and makers from 3 countries and 16 states explore the substance of material, paying special attention to their place in the world, either from a focus inward, or how they identify in society at large. This international exhibition was juried by Jiseon Lee Isbara, Otis College of Art and Design, and Jessica Kooiman Parker, Boulder Dairy Art Center.
