SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: INTERPLAY with the SDA
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in INTERPLAY\, organized by the SDA!(The awesome Surface Design Association!)Presented at the The Dairy Barn Arts Center’s O’Bleness Gallery8000 Dairy LaneAthens\, OH 45701June 28 – September 5\, 2024Opening Reception:June 28\, 6 – 8PM\nSEE THE SHOW HERE! \nInterplay presents works that explore parallels\, synergies\, or tensions between two or more ideas. Artworks may examine connections between seemingly unrelated concepts\, map relationships between maker and materials\, or reflect interactions between maker and tools. Works employ traditional\, interdisciplinary\, or collaborative methodologies. \nHonoring the diverse range of approaches within fiber art and highlighting the rich tapestry of multicultural links\, Interplay looks toward a future informed by the past\, bringing together ideas for fresh reflection\, reinterpretation\, and deeper understanding. \nJUROR\nDue to her inimitable curiosity\, Annet Couwenberg has pursued the ongoing conversations between traditional textile production and digital technologies throughout her art and teaching career. Couwenberg’s art\, informed by her early work in the fashion industry\, is diverse and includes sculptural forms and jacquard weavings as well as work with fish fossils and skeletons inspired by her study with a fish scientist as a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of Natural History. Couwenberg’s interdisciplinary work has demonstrated her capacity to create new realms. As a researcher of both traditional textiles and emerging techniques\, she embraces a multi-directional knowledge exchange between new and established\, creating art that visualizes methodologies to protect and preserve traditional practices while also expanding upon them. Born in The Netherlands\, Couwenberg moved to the United States to receive MFA degrees at Syracuse University and Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has worked internationally\, including in Korea\, Turkey\, Germany\, Italy\, Portugal\, Poland\, and The Netherlands. \n Mark your calendars for Wednesday\, July 31\, 2PM ET for the Interplay Textile Talk and be on the lookout for our online gallery –  links coming soon!

DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in WHISPER! at Verum Ultimum Gallery in Portland. \nI will be showing: \n“Excavation of the Interior“ (shown closed and open below) 12 x 28 x 12.5″\, wood\, paper\, cloth\, hemp cord\, linen thread     Says Owner and Curator Jennifer Gillia Cutshall: “…when the murmur from art echoes beyond the walls & settles somewhere secret.  And “Whisper” with an exclamation may signal contradictions or dualities.  The term carries symbolism pertinent to the momentous occasion\, but it also carries mystery to be filled in by artists’ interpretations.  Verum is open to all perceptions of this theme.  Delicate expressions are presented\, as are bold\, and the term WHISPER may be framed in many ways\, not necessarily meant to be a literal elucidation. All mediums and modes of expression were welcomed..  Verum Ultimum Gallery tasks artists to define this inaugural exhibition to herald in Verum’s new space in Southeast Portland this summer of 2024!” \n  \n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: 37th Annual Northern National Art Competition
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to show\, “Hopes and Fears and…” in this exhibition at the  Nicolet College Art Gallery !\n\n24.5 x 16.25″\, textile samples\, linen thread \nThe 37th Northern National Art Competition will be held in Rhinelander\, Wisconsin\, from June 13 – July 27\, 2024\, at the Nicolet College Art Gallery. Began in 1987\, this show is a cooperative venture between Nicolet College Arts & Enrichment and the Northern Arts Council (NAC). The Northern National Art Competition strives to showcase a cross section of contemporary art in a variety of two-dimensional mediums. Each year\, hundreds of artists nationwide submit work to be considered for inclusion in this exhibition\, and the art is always both visually exciting and intellectually stimulating. \nView the show!\nCURATORIAL STATEMENT \nMany people wonder what goes on in the selection process of a juror for an art competition. I suspect that most of the work to which a juror responds resonates with that person for a variety of reasons\, and yet we are all programmed with certain pre-dispositions. \nThe numerous entries for the Northern National competition represented a huge range of work with about two-thirds being representational. My eye moved toward work in diverse media\, work that had texture\, and anything that found a way to address current environmental or global concerns with a certain indirectness. \nI like to get a sense of both the pleasure and struggle in an art-making process. When an artist seems to reach\, experiment\, and allow their work to be less buttoned-up or seamlessly complete\, it becomes infused with energy. Drawing\, painting\, and photography have dominated our realm for a long time. There is still much to be explored in these areas. But in the past decade or less\, textiles and fiber art have fully entered into the contemporary art world\, bringing a freshness of exploration and a reevaluation of histories. We can now look to craft traditions around the world and contemplate how they inspired later art movements\, or how the domestic work and pastimes of women actually parallel the fine arts world more closely than we had previously allowed. We are in a time of diversification in the art world\, where artists of color\, women\, and LBGTQ artists are addressing important issues of identity\, cultural oppression\, and the occlusions of history. And while this is going in\, it is prying open ways of seeing the world and providing access to more means of expression to discuss pertinent issues. \nThe art world has never been better or more confused than it is now. We are called upon to think more broadly. If you are a landscape artist making beautiful watercolor paintings of rivers and fields\, can you push your thinking? Can you ask yourself hard questions? Why am I making this? What does it mean? More importantly\, what does it mean now\, in the context of this era? \nIf you are a photographer seeking beauty in the sky or national parks\, is there a way to address both the beauty and the dire needs of land conservancy and resource protection? Not all art needs to be political. But it should have a tug. It should nudge the viewer toward curiosity and wonder.”\nDebra Brehmer \nView the show!

SUMMARY:"Objects of Agency" Virtual Artists Talk December 21st at 4PM PST\, 7PM EST
DESCRIPTION:Objects of Agency Virtual Artists Talk\nhttps://www.heragallery.org/objects of agency\nPlease join with ZOOM Link below:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88407885936?pwd=cW9tcjMwdFBOci9UdDU3K3RBNlFXdz09\nThursday December 21\, 2023\n 7PM EST / 4PM PST\nObjects of Agency is a 52 week long virtual exhibition\, through 2023. The exhibition addresses the health care crisis which has recently culminated in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and stripped thousands of people of the right to bodily autonomy. \nThe United States has the worst maternal mortality rate among other similarly developed countries. According to the University of Colorado\, due to the Dobbs decision\, maternal mortality rates are projected to go up 14%. For women of color\, it is 20%. Simply due to women’s health care becoming more restrictive and less accessible. \nAt the time this call for art was written\, when “abortion” was typed into a Google search\, the first page result was a misleading website filled with fear slogans and misinformation to prevent women from seeking necessary and viable health care options. A recent research study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate showed that in many right wing states\, 1/10 Google search results for abortion services lead to anti-abortion fake clinics. And when abortion was typed into Instagram\, the first hashtag was #abortionisevil. Due to activists\, advocates\, artists\, and scientists this scale is tipping to provide accessible\, accurate\, and viable healthcare information. \nSo\, what can we do to continue the fight for abortion rights? How can we use our creative voices to counteract misinformation and false advertising and provide viable discourse and inspiration? \nAt Hera Gallery\, we invited you to cry\, rage\, and make art. We invited you to connect with others through creative expression in hopes that it would bring a sense of insight\, or deep feeling\, beauty\, education\, perseverance\, protest\, connection and/or community. Culminating in the virtual exhibition Objects of Agency\, we bring you 52 selections of work from artists across the country. \nEach week\, Hera Gallery chose one featured artist and artwork from the exhibition to represent the tribulations and inspirations of the current state of women’s health care in America. Featured artists will be posted on all social media accounts.\nObjects of Agency aims to stimulate\, educate\, and encourage abortion care. It aims to challenge the anti-abortion campaigns and false information which dominate the internet. It aims to provide access to factual information and ultimately to create a platform and a network to share the voices\, choices\, and stories of all women and female identifying persons.
