SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "Cut/Fold/Press" at Craft Alliance!
DESCRIPTION: I am  thrilled to participate in “Cut/Fold/Press” juried by artist and educator Buzz Spector at Craft Alliance showing “Burning Bush”\n\n\n7.5 x 11 x 5.5″\, board\, mulberry paper\, sewing thread\, linen thread\n“At times\, paper is often thought as a vehicle for other artistic practices. This exhibit embraces the transformational quality of paper and the art created using paper as a primary material. Juried by Craft Alliance’s inaugural Visiting Artist\, Buzz Spector\, this exhibition brings together compelling work on a seemingly simple material and craft form. CUT/FOLD/PRESS asks paper artists to explore and consider the many forms that paper art takes—books\, sculpture\, and sheet.  \nThe exhibition presents artists who use paper as their primary medium or create artworks made on\, of\, or about paper including cut paper\, folded paper\, woven paper\, glued paper\, drawings\, paintings\, pastels\, printmaking\, photographs\, paper sculpture\, 3D\, bound books\, collage\, or as the subject of a video and installation.” \nBuzz Spector is an artist\, writer and emeritus professor of art at Washington University in St. Louis. His academic career includes five years’ service as dean of the College and Graduate School of Art in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts (2009–2013). Spector has also taught at Cornell University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a full professor and at numerous institutions as visiting or adjunct faculty. \nSpector’s art practice makes frequent use of the book\, both as subject and object\, and focuses on relationships between public history\, individual memory and perception. He has had numerous exhibits in private and institutional galleries and museums in the U.S.\, Europe and Asia\, and his solo or two-person museum exhibits have taken place at the Saint Louis Art Museum; Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Washington\, D.C.; Huntington Museum of Art\, West Virginia; Mattress Factory\, Pittsburgh; Orange County Museum of Art\, Newport Beach\, California; Cranbrook Art Museum\, Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan; and most recently\, Rockford Art Museum\, Rockford\, IL. \nSpector has also published two books\, Buzzwords (Sara Ranchouse Publishing\, 2012) and The Book Maker’s Desire (Umbrella Editions\, 1994). He has also written numerous exhibition catalog essays\, including for exhibits by Luis Camnitzer\, Ann Hamilton\, Dan Ramirez and Dieter Roth.  Additionally\, Spector received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Teaching of Art award in 2013. \n Craft Alliance is located in The Maker District of  St. Louis\, is a hub for artists\, enthusiasts\, and students to explore\, learn\, and celebrate the world of contemporary craft. SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "PAPER" Presented by SITE: BROOKLYN
DESCRIPTION:“PAPER” is presented online by Site: Brooklyn\nFebruary 13\, 2025 – March 13\, 2025\nSEE THE SHOW HERE!\nThe 20th century marked the peak\, and subsequent decline\, of paper’s dominance over everyday life. “Paperwork” is still a near-universal experience\, but like everything else\, has taken a more-and-more virtual form. Paper\, unlike most artistic mediums\, is a substrate first and artistic medium second. Created from textile waste\, paper is woven very deeply into the fabric of modern life. It can be equally associated with the transformation of work\, easy replication\, industriousness\, disposability\, creativity\, and experimentation. Since its invention\, these qualities have encouraged artists to prepare\, design\, and experiment on paper. Ironically\, it was in the later part of the 20th century when artists like Dorothea Rockburne. Ed Ruscha\, and Robert Rauschenberg took the investigations of the Cubists into papier collé and developed paper as both a physical object\, and a subject. Site:Brooklyn is looking for works that continue and expand this tradition.  \nExhibition Juror\, Rachel Gladfelter\,  is the Director at Pace Paper. Previously\, she was the gallery director for the Pace Prints NYC\, a fine art print gallery specializing in original\, limited-edition prints in collaboration with printmaking affiliates\, Pace Editions and Pace Paper. Before that\, Gadfelter held the position of Studio Director for Dieu Donne Paper.  \nSite:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same\, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions\, selected by a cast of new jurors\, solo artist features\, and spotlights.  \nSEE THE SHOW HERE!

SUMMARY:EXHIBTIONISTA: "PENDULUM" at A.D. Gallery
DESCRIPTION:I am happy to participate in the exhibition PENDULUM\, at The A.D. Gallery at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. \n“Gains/losses\, highs/lows\, submerge/emerge……our human experience swings on a pendulum. While we all aim for homeostasis\, the moments the pendulum swings are often when we feel the most alive\, when we are called to act or react. In the past 20 years\, we have faced major political\, social\, environmental\, and personal shifts. These shifts have presented us with obstacles\, challenges as well as moments for reinvention and emergence. This call looks for art that visualizes a swing in the pendulum\, a life altering moment\, a shift in the trajectory.” \nJuror: Emily Beck\nEmily Scott Beck is an interdisciplinary artist and professor in the Department of Art\, Art History and Design at the University of Notre Dame. Her work manipulates and re-contextualizes aspects of our identity that are often hidden within the layers of human communication and interaction. Using video\, animation\, photography\, sculpture\, fibers\, installation\, and sound\, she captures experiences of emotional vulnerability\, unrehearsed performances\, gender construction\, systems of belief\, and women’s labor and leadership. A focus on art as a powerful tool for visual communication and social change is a common thread between her studio practice and her teaching. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States\, including the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh\, NC\, the South Bend Museum of Art in South Bend\, IN\, Elisabet Ney Museum in Austin Texas\, and Woman Made Gallery in Chicago\, IL.\nI am showing my page-less Artists’ Book\,\n“It’s Not Black and White”\, 2021\, 9 x 22 x 7.5″\nbook board\, canvas\, paper\, typewriter ribbon\, hemp cord\, typewriter ribbon\, hemp cord\n\n\nREAD THE PRESS RELEASE!\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "DWELLINGS: An Exhibition of Inhabited Spaces" at ARTLINK
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in the exhibition: “DWELLINGS: An Exhibition of Inhabited Spaces” at ARTLINK\, at the Auer Center for Arts and Culture\, Fort Wayne\, Indiana. I love to get my work involved in events and shows all across the country\, in areas not considered major art centers and off the edges of the US. I find the commitment and caliber of shows\, curators/jurors\, artists and work to be audacious and  inspiring on all fronts. \n“For the exhibition DWELLINGS\, juried by Steve Garst\,  Artlink invited artists to submit works of any media that involve homes\, shelters\, forts\, nests\, burrows\, or any other forms of inhabited space used by humans or non-humans. Where a creature lays its head can be a place of refuge\, sustenance\, and identity.  They are cauldrons of growth\, filled with love\, hurt\, anger\, learning\, and memory.  Often\, homes are constructed and\, in turn\, end up constructing the lives of those who dwell within them\, for better or worse.  Artlink is excited to offer an exhibition exploring the variety of human and non-human places that serve as home\, in all its numerous manifestations.”  \nI am showing “Window Treatment”\n\nWindow Treatment\,  2018\, 13 x 38 x 9.25″\, book board/file folders/file cards/hemp cord\, wax\n \n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "REWRITING HER STORY" at the Hera Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“Writer Elizabeth Lesser asks “What story would Eve have told about picking the apple? Why is Pandora blamed for opening the box? And what about the fate of Cassandra who was blessed with knowing the future but cursed so that no one believed her?” \nFlipping through the pages of your high school history textbook\, how many stories are written about women as monumental protagonists? When was the last time you watched a movie that passed the Bechdel test? When was the last time there were more women than men on the Supreme Court voting on the right to our bodies?  \nAs brands of “faux” feminism partnered with consumerist culture push out media representing women’s liberation through a patriarchal gaze\, how can we reclaim the visual language to share more authentic stories? How can our art share the stories of women\, trans women\, and non-binary folks written out of the history books? How does your work give voice to the overlooked and underrepresented?  \nHera Gallery presents 52 works that rewrite this cultural consciousness for a more inclusive human history.” \nI am honored to have two pieces in this salient exhibition\, and participate in a small way\, in Rewriting Her/Our/Their Story.\nWHITE ZIP\n\n \nand \nINTO THE BUSH\n\n \nPlease see the SHOW here.\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "White and Texture (Monochrome Unity)" at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in  “White & Texture [Monochrome Unity]” at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod! \nAs the call stated: \n“Artists were invited to explore the profound subtleties and striking complexities of using white as the driving color and how texture within the white and informs the execution and the narrative of an artwork\, as well as to to explore the effect of this limitation – without a “conventional” color palette. \nWhen the artist is freed from tradition\, from expectation\, and from the weight of history\, there is an opportunity for release\, exploration\, and the unexpected. For White and Texture [Monochrome Unity]\, artworks were sought that find the emotion without using color. Uniformity\, tranquility universality\, simplicity\, purity\, or abstraction may all come to the surface and create a beautiful tension between what is missing – color\, tradition\, and form – and what is gained – innovation and the unexpected. \nOur desire from the artist is not the search for simplicity but the discovery of a new way of creating and a different way of expression. We hope Monochrome Unity will drive the artist to look for new solutions to an artistic challenge; to use shades of white and embrace texture to provide the ‘color’ that will then provide the energy and emotion. \nUsing the work of such artists as Michael Buthe\, Piero Manzoni\, Joan Nixon\, and ceramic sculptor Maria Barttuszova provide us with a broad template of the experience to create in the Cultural Center. \nWhite & Texture [Monochrome Unity] will fill our galleries\, creating a visual harmony and coherence and like never before\, give a visitor experience like no other.” \nI am showing WHITE ZIP\n21.25″ x 20.5″ x .25″\, canvas\, acrylic paint\, lace\, zipper\, hemp cord\, linen thread\, wood\n\n(detail) \n
