SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "The California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers"
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to have three works in:\n“The California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers”\nOpening at the Long Beach Museum of Art October 4\, 2025 and running through January 4\, 2026!\n\n\n\n\nThe California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers\n\n\n\n\nOctober 4\, 2025 – March 8\, 2026 \nThe California Effect—New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is rich in both artists and bookworks. There are 29 artists exhibiting 54 books\, boxes\, and broadsides. Some are in limited editions and others are one-of-a-kind. All are handmade individually with handmade and fine papers\, cloth\, thread\, glue\, inks\, and paint. What exactly is the California effect? More precisely\, what is the effect on the many of us who live\, work\, and visit here? The misty mornings and baking hot afternoons? The endless coastline\, chill forests or dry desert arroyos? Each of us has an answer\, seen in the books we make\, in our tastes and inspirations. We turn to making books: printing them\, binding them\, reinventing them\, turning them into art—making books as art. \nThe California Chapter is one of ten chapters\, revealing the national reach and scope of the Guild and its dedication to promoting interest and awareness in the tradition of book and paper arts. The members include hand bookbinders\, design binders\, conservators\, calligraphers\, makers of artist books\, fine press printers and papermakers. A fully illustrated catalogue with information about each artwork and biographical information about each artist is available to order. \nThe California Effect exhibition and related programming are graciously supported by The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation\, the Pasadena Art Alliance\, and the Bess J. Hodges Foundation \n\nYou can order the beautiful catalogue designed by artist Rebecca Chamlee of Pie in the Sky Press HERE and HERE\n\nAnd… while you are there\, don’t miss:\nVoice of the Artist: Artist Books from the Permanent Collection \n\n\n\nOctober 4\, 2025 – March 8\, 2026 \nThroughout its 75-year history\, the Museum has presented contemporary art in all media\, including the book arts. In 1983\, the Museum organized At Home\, an exhibition that included artists’ books by women created between 1970 and 1983. In 2009\, Novel Constructions—Artists Create Monumental Books explored books as sculptural installations and included works by Genie Shenk and Carol Shaw-Sutton\, both of whom are represented in the Ocean View Gallery. In 2019\, the Museum presented The Artful Book of the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers\, and it continues this tradition with The California Effect. \nVoice of the Artist highlights a selection of artists’ books from the Museum’s permanent collection. It touches on the history of the medium\, from the livre d’artiste exemplified by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso\, to contemporary offset-printed codex forms such as Barbara Kruger’s My Pretty Pony. Artists continue to expand the definition of the book through unconventional materials\, like the tar paper in Genie Shenk’s Ring or the carved wood of Suvan Geer’s Author\, Author? Unstill Poetry. The exhibition features a variety of forms\, including traditional codex forms\, accordion books\, and a pop-up sculpture by Paul Johnson. The Museum gratefully acknowledges the generous support of a donor-collector Museum member\, who anonymously provided both the exhibition and the video revealing more of the books’ interiors. \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nLong Beach Museum of Art\n2300 E Ocean Blvd.\n\n\n\n\n\nMember & VIP Opening Reception: 5-7 pm\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission Opening Reception: 7-9 pm

SUMMARY:Artist-In-Residence: The Silverlake Independent JCC!
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to serve as this year’s Artist-In-Residence at the SILVERLAKE INDEPENDENT JCC!\nI have created an 18 x 30′ tapestry in six panels\, which will be detailed in blog posts.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to Days of Awesome at SIJCC!\nEach year\, Rosh Hashanah\, Yom Kippur\, and the days in between invite us to reconnect with what matters most. In Jewish tradition\, they are called the Days of Awe. At SIJCC\, we call them the Days of Awesome. The Days of Awesome are a community-rooted invitation to show up just as you are. To reconnect with yourself. To recast belonging. To remember that we are part of something imaginative and courageous. \nCome with questions\, hopes\, hurts. Bring your family\, your friends\, your imagination.\nEverybody-friendly. God-optional.  \nChildcare\, youth programming\, and three communal meals will nourish us along the way.\nSee options below to decide what’s right for you. \n\n We’re thrilled to welcome Debra Disman as this year’s Days of Awesome Artist-in-Residence!\n\nA Los Angeles–based artist\, Debra’s work bridges books\, textiles\, sculpture\, and installation to create spaces of wonder\, reflection\, and connection. Her practice weaves together making\, teaching\, and community engagement\, and her pieces have been shown in museums and art centers across the country.\nThis season she’s creating an original\, interactive tapestry for our High Holidays – a chance for our community to experience art as part of our sacred gatherings.\n\n Experience it at Days of Awesome.\n\n\n#HighHolidays #SIJCC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist-in-Residence\nDebra Disman\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDebra Disman is a Los Angeles-based artist known for her work inspired by the book\, both as a solo practitioner and in the public sphere of community engagement. Her practice traverses textiles\, installation\, sculpture and performance to push the familiar into forms that arrest and baffle\, while simultaneously offering places of contemplation and solace. As a maker\, teaching artist\, researcher and writer she creates work and projects which investigate states of being and connectiveness through intensive interactions with materials while attempting to fully explore and exploit their haptic properties. \nHer work is widely shown in museums\, galleries\, art centers\, universities and libraries including The Torrance Art Museum; Art Share LA; The Irvine Fine Arts Center; The New Bedford Art Museum; The Brand Library and Art Center; ReflectSpace Gallery in Glendale\, CA; Craft Contemporary in LA: The Long Beach Museum of Art; The University of the Arts in Philadelphia; The Cape Cod Museum of Art; and The Charles E. Young Research Library at UCLA\, as well as through social practice and community endeavors. \nDisman was the featured artist for the 2016 Big Read in LA and recipient of an 2016-17 WORD: Artist Grant / Bruce Geller Memorial Prize. She was commissioned by LA’s Craft Contemporary to create the interactive book “Chromatic Interactions” in 2017 and 18th Street Arts Center to create the artists’ book\, “Unfolding Possibilities” in 2021. Her book “CONCURRENCIES Charlotte Salomon and Eva Hesse: Genius\, Trauma and the Creative Imagination” was published by ReflectSpace Gallery/Glendale Arts and Culture in 2023. \nShe was a 2018 Studio Resident at the Camera Obscura Art Lab at 1450 Ocean in Santa Monica\, and has served as an Artist-in-Residence for the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs since 2017\, directing the “We Write the Book” project. A Santa Monica Artist Fellow in 2021-22\, she has been a local artist in residence at 18th Street Arts Center since 2018.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: EMBRACING THE CRAFT at CORE Art Space
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in \nFiber Art: Embracing the Craft\nSeptember 12 – 28\, 2025\nat\n\n\n\n\n\nFri: 5p – 9p\, Sat: 12p – 5p\, Sun: 12p – 5p\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCore Art Space — 6501 W.Colfax Avenue\, Lakewood\, CO 80214\n\n\n\n\nLong disparaged in the art world as mere “craft\,” fiber art has been enjoying something of a renaissance in the last few years. Artists working with fabric and other fibers\, such as Bisa Butler and Alexandra Kehayoglou\, have gained international recognition\, and the New York Times has declared that “fiber art is finally being taken seriously.” We say\, it’s about time! What’s not to love about the beauty\, versatility\, and luxuriousness of fiber media? \nIn this show\, Core Art Space celebrates the skill\, dedication\, and ingenuity required to make beautiful art out of fiber materials. We celebrate weavings\, quilts\, embroideries\, beadwork\, fiber sculptures\, or wearables—all artwork using a foundation of fiber materials and processes (including fabric\, yarn\, thread\, beads\, roving\, rope\, etc.; stitching\, weaving\, felting\, quilting\, knotting\, wrapping\, lacemaking\, etc.) is eligible. Both traditional and experimental forms and techniques included. \nJuror\nFiber and mixed media artist Susan Dillon explores the physical manifestation of emotions and memories using fabric\, thread\, yarn\, bones and found objects. She creates environments filled with life forms\, some familiar and some more otherworldly\, which are encrusting surfaces & niches and colonizing their surroundings. Susan has had her work exhibited nationally and has won numerous \nawards for her fiber art. Her work is in private collections around the globe. She teaches workshops as well as private lessons on fiber art techniques. Susan lives in Denver\, CO with her husband & furry “keeds”. She has her studio at Globeville Riverfront Art Center (GRACe)\, open by appointment and at special events. \nI am showing “PROFUSION”\n\n8.5 x 24.5 x 7.75\, book board\, mulberry paper\, watercolor paper\, raw canvas\, hemp cord

This versatile and sculptural book requires no hole punching or sewing\, making it perfect for artists of all skill levels. \n\n\nYou’ll learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nCreate the foundational folded and glued structure \n\n\nDisplay your book in multiple creative ways \n\n\nTransform the sculptural form into a familiar codex format \n\n\nExplore various presentation methods and artistic possibilities  \n\n\n\n\nDebra will also share examples from her own extensive body of work\, showing how she has used this structure to create numerous compelling book pieces. \n\n\nWhat You Need\n\n\nThe beauty of this workshop is its accessibility—you can literally create this structure using just 4 pieces of standard 8.5 x 11″ copier paper! However\, for the best results\, Debra recommends having these materials on hand: \n\n\nEssential Tools\n\n\n\n\nScissors (or just use folding and tearing techniques!) \n\n\nGlue stick \n\n\nPencil \n\n\nBone folder (optional—you can use your glue stick as a folding tool) \n\n\n\n\nRecommended Materials\n\n\n\n\nAccordion Spine: One 11 x 17″ tag board or cardstock sheet \n\n\nCovers: Two 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces of railroad board or similar cardboard \n\n\nPages: Three 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces (or slightly smaller at 5.25″ for easier handling) \n\n\n\n\nChoose your own colors and get creative with your material choices! \n\n\nOptional Enhancement Materials\n\n\n\n\nScrap paper and easy-to-glue fabric \n\n\nWashi tape\, decorative tapes\, stickers\, ribbon \n\n\nEphemera: old letters\, cards\, ticket stubs\, journal pages\, and other meaningful materials \n\n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop?\n\n\nThe “Folded Fan” structure is incredibly versatile and forgiving\, making it an ideal entry point for new bookmakers while offering endless creative possibilities for experienced artists. Whether you’re interested in creating artist books\, journals\, display pieces\, or sculptural works\, this foundational technique will open up new avenues for your artistic expression. \n\n\nReady to Join?\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn from Debra Disman and connect with fellow artists in our supportive online community. Spaces are limited\, so register today! \n\n\nSign up here using our Google form \n\n\nRemember: You’ll receive your Zoom link the day before the workshop\, so keep an eye on your inbox! \n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what beautiful books you’ll create. Happy making \n\n\nQuestions about the workshop? Feel free to reach out to Shoebox Arts for more information. shoeboxartsla@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: BRAND 53: National Juried Show of Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to have my artists’ book\, “THIN ICE” made in collaboration with artist Luciana Abait\, shown in Brand 53: Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper   \n\n\nOpening Date: July 19\, 2025  \n\n\nThe Associates of Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale\, California host its 53rd Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper this summer. All works in the show will be on view in the beautiful Brand Library’s Gallery and in both printed and online exhibition catalogs.  \nThis year’s juror\, Sigrid Burton\, considers color and drawing as the foundation of her artistic practice and is noted for her works in oil on canvas or linen and mixed media on paper. She explores the natural world both literally and figuratively\, with the intention of making light and depth tangible and visible on a two-dimensional picture plane. Burton captures the phenomenological occurrence of reflection and refraction of light\, in particular\, water\, sky and deep space. Her studies of the art of the Indian subcontinent and its ancient and sophisticated aesthetic theory have influenced her thinking that the importance of a work of art is the response that the work evokes from the viewer. Within this context\, color is understood to have great expressive and communicative power. \nThe Brand Associates will be offering a printed exhibition catalog for purchase at Brand Library & Art Center.\nA digital version of the catalog is also available to download for free. \nView the Online CATALOG HERE!\nPlease see a video of show HERE with a talk by Juror Sigrid Burton\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "CARE" at Hera Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Hera Gallery proudly presents CARE\, a national juried exhibition exploring the concept of care through the eyes of artists from around the country.\n\n\n\n\nWorks selected by Priya N. Green\, Artist\, Painting Faculty\, Director of CCSU Chen Art Gallery\nMay 10th – June 14th\, 2025\nOpening Reception Saturday\, May 10th\, 6-8pm\nMix & Mingle: Arts & Health Thursday May 22nd\, 6 -7:30pm\nVirtual Artist Talk Thursday\, May 29th\, 7pm via Zoom\n\n\nWhen you hear or read the word CARE…\nDo you hear a noun\, a verb\, an imperative? Do you feel comforted\, overwhelmed\, or inspired by the sound and meaning of the word Care? \nHera Gallery is interested in how we as artists and as society relate to the concept of care at this moment in time.  \nFrom taking care and giving care to self-care\, and the call to care –  the idea of care runs through all our lives from beginning to end. Human care\, animal care\, environmental care\, or caring for an idea\, a faith\, a passion\, a commitment. Care is associated with cultural connections\, age\, and gender. How is this shifting? How do we find balance when engaged in caregiving at all levels? \nArtists respond to the question:\nHow does the word Care resonate with you\, which images\, stories\, sentiments does it bring forth in you? Which role does care play in your life as an artist and in your artistic practice? \nI am thrilled to share my triptych “RENT WOUND TEAR MEND HEAL REPAIR” 64 x 68 x .5″ (dimnesions variable)\, canvas\, paint\, hemp cord\, string\, lace\, in this timely show
