For more information about their work\, visit the catalogue for the exhibition here: Book As Art\, vol.8: Infinity Catalogue \nDebra Disman is a Los Angeles-based artist working primarily in the form of the book\, both as a solo practitioner and in the public sphere of community engagement. As a maker and teaching artist she creates work and projects which push the boundaries of the book into new forms and materials. Her work is shown in museums\, galleries\, universities and libraries across the US including The Brand Library and Art Center in Glendale\, CA\, Craft Contemporary in LA\, The University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Disman was the featured artist for the Big Read in LA in 2016; is the recipient of a WORD: Artist Grant / Bruce Geller Memorial Prize in 2016 to create “The Sheltering Book”\, a life-sized book structure; and was commissioned by LA’s Craft Contemporary Museum to create an interactive book for their 2017 exhibition\, “Chapters: Book Arts in Southern California.” She was a Studio Resident at the Camera Obscura Art Lab in 2018\, and was awarded five Artist-in-Residence grants from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs since 2017 to work with the diverse Valley communities of LA. \nArtist Christian Feneck combines his architectural training with painting\, print\, and installation art to create visual experiences of space using color. Feneck’s paintings explore the relationship of vision and the understanding of space by using architectural perspective conventions in combination with a layered series of translucent color fields.. Born in Massachusetts but raised primarily in Hawaii\, California\, and Florida\, Feneck has resided in Fort Lauderdale since 2004. Feneck was a Visiting Professor of Architectural Design and Theory at Florida Atlantic University and participated in the FATVillage Artist Incubator Residency and the IS Projects Existent Books Residency programs. Feneck contributed to numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout South Florida as well as curated several installation art exhibitions. \nJulie Fordham is a mixed media artist working in Atlanta\, Ga. She attended Rhode Island School of Design where she studied Illustration. Julie’s work is a personal narrative. She uses plants\, animals\, and insects along with her figures to interpret the world and the people around her. She creates intuitively and enjoys experimenting with new materials. She loves tedium and contrast. The combination of rough texture with feminine details. Tons of miniscule stitches and lace. Bright colors with dark heavy feeling imagery. Words are added as a source of texture. Her work explores the symbolism tied to animals and plants and reframes them in a way that establishes her own visual vocabulary. She has shown around the city of Atlanta and Nashville\, and participated in many shows at the Tannery Row Artist Colony in Buford. \nNicole Polonsky is a visual artist whose practice encompasses limited-edition prints\, bookworks and multiples; drawing and unique object-making; writing; film\, installations and performance. She also devises and produces group projects and exhibitions\, and collaborates with other artists to realize cross-disciplinary ventures. Nicole gained her bachelor’s degree at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art\, University of Oxford\, and master’s in Print at the Royal College of Art\, London UK. She has shown extensively throughout her career. Recent exhibitions include lapse:re:lapse\, MOCA London WE UK; Lighting Up Time\, Northern Print and Side Cinema\, Newcastle UK; A Pollock’s Gallimaufry\, and The Contemporary Print\, Flatbed Press and Gallery\, Texas USA. In 2019 Nicole received an Arts Council England Project Grant for Lighting Up Time; she was shortlisted for the 2018 Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking and the 2016 Neo:Printprize .Nicole’s artworks are held in private collections internationally and public collections at Museum of Modern Art and Lafayette College; Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art\,and the Victoria and Albert Museum\, among others. Her work was featured in a number of publications including Creative Review\, Art Monthly and Printmaking Today\, as well as The Word is Art. Nicole lives and works in London\, UK. \nChris Revelle is an interdisciplinary artist with a socially-engaged and research- based studio practice. Through the examination of history\, language\, and visual culture\, Revelle’s work confronts the failures and abuses of social\, political\, and economic systems. The goal of his practice is to challenge public memory while inspiring discourse and empathy. Revelle has exhibited in the United States\, Hong Kong\, London\, South Korea\, and India. He was the recipient of the 2018 Idea Capital Grant and a finalist for the 2017 Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize. Revelle has created work for United Nations organizations\, and was formerly the Chair of Fine Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design\, Hong Kong\, and a Faculty Instructor of Painting and Drawing at Arizona State University. He earned his Master of Fine Arts from the School of Art at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) in Valencia\, CA.

DESCRIPTION:I am honored to be participating in:  \nChasing Ghosts V: Art that Pierces the Veil through remembrance\, legacy\, & beyond\nThis show emphasizes the idea of revealing the unseen or the soul in a work of art. The term ghost may be interpreted in many ways\, not necessarily meant to be a literal elucidation. This year’s interpretation might be loaded with the added turmoil of current social\, health\, environmental\, and political climate.  The exhibition asks artists: “Does your process manifest an identity within your work that somehow speaks to the past? Do you express your deepest fears or concerns through your work? Do current political\, health\, and environmental concerns follow you into the studio and shadow or define your work? What ghosts or parts of the past leave their mark on your work? Is a legacy revealed through your work or your process? Is memory a vital vehicle of expression for you? Do you inadvertently honor something from your past or concern for the future through your work? ”  \n Verum Ultimum never seeks to drive the work\, the only hope to unveil unique visions. \nVerum Ultimum Gallery has engaged audiences of artists and collectors since its founding in Northeast Portland in 2013. \nThe brainchild of artist Jennifer Gillia Cutshall\, Verum Ultimum (meaning the ultimate truth) showcases work that demonstrates the deepest connection to the creative process.

SUMMARY:"Building Networks of Empathy"
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Building Networks of Empathy is the second of a two-part show that asks us to consider the ways in which art empowers not only the artist\, but its viewers to transform their most difficult experiences into enlightened outcomes. The first part of the show is an ongoing online-only exhibition entitled Facing Darkness\, which encouraged artists in our community to reflect internally on our current moment of pandemic\, isolation\, and structural inequity laid bare. \nFor this second part\, which will be physically installed in 18th Street Arts Center’s spacious Airport campus hangar galleries\, artists were asked to respond to how they have changed as a result of their inner reflections on darkness\, and to imagine new futures and societal structures as we see our way out of crisis. Each artist grapples as well with the role that art can play in social reflection\, expression\, and cultural paradigm shifts as a result of a deeper understanding of each other\, and the empathy that follows. The exhibition sees empathy not only as a way to share and understand what others are going through\, but also as a natural and endless resource that we can all rely on when crisis and emergency hit\, with hopes that we can turn this moment of collective fear into a sublime experience. \nDebra Disman\, Chromatic Interactions: The Golden Thread\, 2020. This program is made possible by funding from Aroha Philanthropies and is part of a nationwide campaign to bring thoughtful and specialized programs to a valuable population that is often undeserved by arts institutions.We invite you to register for this cycle’s participant cohort. This 8-session bookmaking series taught by artist Debra Disman will meet through the online platform Zoom\, every Friday at 11am – 1pm. Starting August 7 through September 11\, 2020. DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to be included in FACING DARKNESS\, an online exhibition of works created by artists from 18th Street Art Center‘s 18th street and airport campuses. \nTour the Show!\n“In our darkest hours\, it is natural and human to seek connection with others\, to face the darkness together so that we can imagine a brighter path forward. In our current pandemic-time of crisis and isolation\, this instinct can feel thwarted\, and lead us to even darker places. Art is one of the ways that communities can find resilience in isolation\, a method of aesthetic communication that empowers both the artist and the viewer to transform the most difficult and paradigm-breaking experiences into new visions for the future. Even as the arts and cultural infrastructure in the US is in deep crisis\, the work of artists reflecting on this time and its socio-cultural reverberations is even more necessary for binding us together and rebuilding our world. As Californians for the Arts director Julie Baker quipped “A first responder comes in and saves a life. A second responder comes in and helps rebuild a life.” \nArtists are second responders\, and this exhibition of 25 varied artists from 18th Street’s artist community present multivalent ways that artworks that address the human capacity to overcome hardships on both global and personal scales. From meditations on memory\, investigations into the warped passage of time\, working through fraught familial relationships\, and grappling with fear and longing in a time of public health crises and inequities laid bare\, the artists in this show address our current moment both obliquely and directly\, with humor\, melancholy\, and uncomfortable propositions. Photo courtesy of the Quinn Research Center and The Terryettes. \nJoin us for a unique celebration\, and community art project from noon to 1PM\nCELEBRATING\nThelma Terry: Athlete\, Educator\, and Community Leader\nA Women’s History Month Celebration\nSaturday\, March 7\, 2020 | 10 AM – 1 PM\nVirginia Avenue Park\, Thelma Terry Building\n2200 Virginia Ave\, Santa Monica \n“In observance of Women’s History Month\, Virginia Avenue Park\, 18th Street Arts Center\, and the Quinn Research Center are teaming up to celebrate the life and work of Thelma Terry\, a community leader with a lasting legacy around teen recreation\, athletics\, and arts education in the Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica. Through her life’s work\, Thelma Terry touched so many in the community\, but has very little presence online or in the history books. Through the efforts of Quinn Research Center\, researcher Sabrina Fields\, Virginia Avenue Park\, and 18th Street Arts Center\, Terry will finally have a Wikipedia page that matches her profound influence in the community. The Quinn Research Center provided photos and historical information on Thelma Terry from their archives for this page\, and 18th Street Arts Center was able to provide some first-hand oral history accounts from their culturemapping90404.org project. Through art-making\, sharing stories\, local history presentations\, food\, and more\, the community will celebrate Thelma Terry’s legacy at the Thelma Terry Center on Saturday March 7\, 2020 from 10am-1pm. \nNestled in Santa Monica’s Pico neighborhood\, the Thelma Terry building is a recreation facility right in the heart of Virginia Avenue Park. The building is used primarily for community gathering activities: everything from baile folklorico rehearsals to rent control information sessions. Although the essence of these activities are in line with the legacy of Thelma Terry\, only a few know about her influence in the Westside\, specifically in Venice and Santa Monica. \nThe event on March 7th will feature a community art-making activity with Debra Disman\, a presentation from Art+Feminism’s West Coast rep Stacey Allan\, memories of Mrs. Terry from her contemporaries and students\, and a call for more Santa Monicans to get involved in future Wikipedia-thons to record and write the histories of underrecognized women leaders of color in this community. DESCRIPTION:I am delighted to participate in: \nLoveland Artists Collective Presents A National Juried Book Arts Show: \nThe HeART of the Book\n \nFebruary 14th – March 28th\, 2020 \n“The book has long been treasured as a literary work of art\, but it is often forgotten in the realm of visual art.   Book arts have been around as long as humanity has been writing and reading\, but within the last couple of decades\, the book arts have become increasingly diverse and innovative.     The Loveland Artists Collective has been invited to show this group exhibition at Artworks\, which is the largest Studio Artist Community in Northern Colorado dedicated to advancing the contemporary arts and visual artists.  \n(click here for more info on Artworks).   \nArtists will be on display in the South Gallery at Artworks in downtown Loveland from February 14th – March 28th.  This exhibit will be promoted and included in the Loveland Sweetheart Festival\, which occurs February 14-16\, 2020 .  The festival is expected to bring 35\,000 visitors along with the normal foot traffic Loveland receives during this important month.”

The show highlights how artists from different backgrounds and whose practices range from traditional to experimental art can dialogue through one of the earliest and most fundamental tools for human expression\, drawing. This process of mark-making reveals the initial creative impulse that may later take the form of a video\, a performance\, a piece of music\, an art installation\, a painting\, or a drawing itself.
