SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: TEXT/MESSAGE with Shoebox Projects
DESCRIPTION:“Text/Message” focuses on how we use text in fine art. Whether painting\, sculpture\, mixed media\, video\, digital\, the use of text plays an integral part in telling stories. It can add a poetic layer\, or a humorous anecdote. Text can challenge societal assumptions\, activate our inner desires or crusade for long held beliefs. SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: SAFEKEEPING: SDA's 2023 Member Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to be a part of “SAFEKEEPING“\, the 2023 Member Exhibition of the Surface Design Association! (SDA)\nEXHIBITION THEME:\nThis is a time for safeguarding both body and land\, for seeking refuge through ritual and narrative\, and for defending precarious boundaries and issues. \nSanctuary Cities\, Nature Conservancies\, Safe Houses\, Communities of Care are at the forefront of public consciousness. As an artist\, how do you sustain both the earth and its communities? How do you protect yourself in body and spirit as well as strengthen connections with others? How can you tend values that matter most? How do you use heritage\, ritual\, and the making process to anchor yourself? Safekeeping brings together works that explore these questions and the role artists play in stewarding communities\, values\, and the earth. \n Safekeeping will celebrate works that push the evolution of textiles through the use of color\, design\, processes\, and meanings.\n\nView the Show HERE!\nListen to the Artists’ Talk HERE!\n\nJUROR\nBorn in Oklahoma\, Anita Fields is a contemporary Native American multi-disciplinary artist of Osage heritage. She is known for her works which combine clay and textile with Osage knowledge systems. Fields explores the intricacies of cultural influences at the intersection of balance and chaos found within our existence\, explaining that: “The power of transformation is realized by creating various forms of clothing\, coverings\, landscapes\, and figures. The works become indicators of how we understand our surroundings and visualize our place within the world.” In this way\, the early Osage concepts of duality\, such as earth and sky\, male and female\, are represented throughout her work. \nIMPORTANT DATES: \n*June 2\, 2023: Exhibition Opening\, First Friday Art Crawl\n*June 21\, 2023: Textile Talk Virtual Program\n*July 23\, 2023: Exhibition Closes

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "Oh\, Mother" at the Hera Gallery
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to be a part of the international group exhibition: “Oh\, Mother” at the Hera Gallery\n“The word MOTHER – as both a verb and a noun – is rich and timeless\, yet overdetermined\, and even controversial when gendered and rendered exclusive. Mothers and motherhood have been romanticized and glorified since the Venus of Willendorf and have been the subject of representation over the ages in every ethnic\, cultural\, religious\, spiritual\, social\, and environmental contexts.  \nWhat does the word MOTHER mean to you? As a child of a mother? As a witness to a mother? As a mother\, or a person who mothers? As a human being deeply connected to Mother Earth?  As an artist\, what images does the notion of motherhood conjure up in you? Are they generous and abundant\, filled with nourishment and laughter?  Or are they frail\, overwhelming\, and. Confusing. Are they filled with a sense of darkness\, destruction\, or  a void? Hera Gallery looks for works which examine\, unravel\, deconstruct\, and re-write the myths of motherhood.”\n \nJuror: Nadiah Rivera Fellah\, Associate Curator at the Cleveland Museum of Art\nOpening Reception: Saturday May 13\, 6-8pm\nVirtual Artist Talk: TBD\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "Objects of Agency" at the HERA
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in:\n \nObjects of Agency\nA Virtual Exhibition \nOn view at heragallery.org and @hera_gallery on social media \nObjects of Agency addresses the health care crisis which has recently culminated in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and stripped thousands of people of the right to bodily autonomy.  \nThe United States has the worst maternal mortality rate among other similarly developed countries. According to the University of Colorado\, due to the Dobbs decision\, maternal mortality rates are projected to go up 14%. For women of color\, it is 20%. Simply due to women’s health care becoming more restrictive and less accessible. \nWhen “abortion” is typed into a Google search\, the first page that comes up is a misleading website filled with fear slogans and misinformation to prevent women from seeking necessary and viable health care options. A recent research study by the Center for Countering Digital Hate showed that in many right wing states\, 1/10 Google search results for abortion services lead to anti-abortion fake clinics. When abortion is typed into Instagram\, the first hashtag is #abortionisevil.  \nSo\, what do we do? How can we use our creative voices to counteract misinformation and false advertising and provide viable discourse and inspiration?  \nHera Gallery has invited artists to fight\, cry\, rage\, and make art\, and to  to connect with others through creative expression in hopes that it brings a sense of insight\, or deep feeling\, beauty\, education\, perseverance\, protest\, connection and/or community. We have invited artists to share their voices through the virtual exhibition Objects of Agency. \nObjects of Agency is composed of 53 works which speak to abortion rights in the United States. The virtual exhibition takes place over the 52 weeks of 2023. All selected works will be on virtual display throughout the duration of the exhibition on heragallery.org.  Each week\, Hera Gallery will choose one featured artist and artwork from the exhibition to represent the current tribulations and inspirations of the current state of women’s health care in America. Featured artists will be posted on all social media accounts. Objects of Agency aims to stimulate\, educate\, and encourage abortion care. It aims to challenge the anti-abortion campaigns and false information which dominate the internet. It aims to provide access to factual information and ultimately to create a platform and a network to share the voices\, choices\, and stories of all women and female identifying persons. \nGallery commission of sold works will be donated to Planned Parenthood. \nParticipating artists will have the opportunity to speak in a virtual artist talk hosted by Hera Gallery. \nAbout Hera Gallery:\nHera Educational Foundation and Gallery promotes contemporary professional artists through a comprehensive exhibition schedule of member work\, curated\, and juried intersectional social justice shows. Together with thought-provoking programming our organization encourages dialogue that enriches the cultural life of our non-urban Southern RI community. We provide a venue for young talent to find a public voice\, and creative support to local health services. Since its inception in 1974\, Hera has been resolutely dedicated to gender equity and feminist discourse to challenge perceptions and inspire social change. \nBecause of its flexibility and commitment to presenting exhibitions with artistic merit and integrity Hera has been awarded numerous grants for its exhibitions and programs including grants from Rhode Island State Council on the Arts\, The Champlin Foundation\, Rhode Island Council on the Humanities\, Rhode Island Foundation\, and the Puffin Foundation. \nI am showing\, “Excavation of the Interior”\, 2021\, 12 x 28 x 12.5″\, Mixed media: wood\, mulberry paper\, canvas\, muslin\, watercolor paper\, hemp cord and linen thread. It stands upright in any degree of opened/closed. Open\, it can span up to 28″ wide.\n
