SUMMARY:Book Art Making at the Torrance Art Museum!
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US!\n\nSaturday April 25th from 11AM to 3PM create your own one- of-a-kind artists’ book in conjunction with and response to the incredible Ralph Steadman show “And Another currently at the beautiful Torrance Art Museum! (TAM)\n\n\nExplore the show\, and add your own text and images to your book!\nOn view from March 28 – May 09\, 2026\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAIN GALLERY: Ralph Steadman: and Another Thing\nThis traveling exhibition spans over 60 years of Ralph Steadman’s influential career\, featuring more than 140 original artworks and ephemera\, including sketchbooks\, handwritten notes\, and personal photographs. Steadman is best known for his long collaboration with Hunter S. Thompson\, notably illustrating “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Their partnership helped define Gonzo journalism\, a style of reporting that blends personal experience with political commentary. Coined by journalist Bill Cardoso\, Gonzo’s impact is still felt today in online news\, editorial pieces\, social media\, and political punditry. \nThe exhibition showcases his diverse body of work\, from iconic illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” to collections like “The Gonzovation Trilogy\,” created in collaboration with documentarian and filmmaker Ceri Levy to raise awareness about endangered species. Featured works include nine portraits of U.S. Presidents\, over 20 images of famous people\, including T.S. Eliot\, Karl Marx\, Virginia Woolf\, and George Orwell\, and “Vintage Dr. Gonzo\,” a life-size bronze sculpture. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Ralph Steadman Art Collection. Sponsored by United Therapeutics\, Flying Dog\, and Beta Technologies.

SUMMARY:Startup Art Fair LA: SHOEBOX Arts Initiative: Call and Response Collaborative Books
DESCRIPTION:Call and Response Goes Live at Startup Art Fair \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSomething big is happening. \n\n\nAfter five years of digital exchanges connecting artists across six continents\, Call and Response is going physical for the first time. \n\n\nStartup Art Fair LA | February 27 – March 1\, 2026The Kinney Venice Beach | Room 202\n\n \n\n\nTHE PROJECT \n\n\nIn October 2025\, we randomly paired 190 artists to create collaborative books together. Four months later\, we have approximately 90 unique collaborative works—oracle decks\, teabag weavings\, painted photographs\, sculptural volumes\, accordion books\, visual puzzles. \n\n\nEach book represents a creative conversation between two strangers who had never met. From India to Iowa\, Germany to the United Arab Emirates—artists navigated time zones\, shipping logistics\, language barriers\, and completely different creative approaches to make something neither could have conceived alone. \n\n\nThis is Call and Response at its core: random pairing\, radical trust\, real collaboration.\n \nCall and Response\, a global artist collaboration program that has connected over 500 artists across six continents since 2020\, makes its first physical iteration at Startup Art Fair LA. \nAfter 20+ digital rounds of rapid-fire creative exchanges during the pandemic\, this exhibition marks a significant evolution: 190 artists were randomly paired to create collaborative books together over four months. Partners worked either by mailing physical books back and forth internationally or creating pieces individually and combining them—navigating time zones\, language barriers\, shipping logistics\, and completely different artistic approaches to produce works that neither artist could have conceived alone. \nRoom 202 will showcase approximately 90 collaborative artist books across all mediums—from altered vintage volumes to handmade constructions\, accordion books\, visual puzzles\, oracle decks\, and sculptural interpretations. The intimate hotel suite setting allows visitors to interact closely with each unique work\, displayed throughout the space on beds\, tables\, and dressers. \nThis is a selling exhibition with works split equally between the two collaborating artists and Shoebox Arts. Each book represents the artifact of a four-month creative conversation between strangers who became collaborators through Call and Response’s signature random pairing method—a model that continues to prove quality collaboration doesn’t require institutional gatekeepers\, just radical trust in the creative process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE EXHIBITION \n\n\nLocation: The Kinney Venice Beach\, 737 Washington Blvd\, Venice\, CA 90292Room: 202 \n\n\nHours: \n\n\n\n\nFriday\, February 27: VIP Early Access 5-7pm | All Access 7-10pm \n\n\nSaturday\, February 28: 12pm – 9pm \n\n\nSunday\, March 1: 12pm – 7pm \n\n\n\n\nThe intimate hotel suite setting allows visitors to interact closely with each work—books displayed throughout the space on beds\, tables\, and dressers. This is a selling exhibition with works split equally between the two collaborating artists and Shoebox Arts. \n\n\nGet Tickets: www.startup-art.com/los-angeles\nMy work in progress with artist Michelle Robinson\n \n  \n\n\nLIVE: EXQUISITE CORPSE ZINE MAKING \n\n\nThroughout the weekend\, fair visitors can participate in collaborative exquisite corpse zine-making sessions. Create art together with strangers\, experience the Call and Response philosophy in real time. \n\n\nAll completed zines will be auctioned off for charity. \n\n\nWHY THIS MATTERS \n\n\nCall and Response started in April 2020 when everything shut down. Artists needed each other but all the structures for connection had disappeared. \n\n\nWhat began as a pandemic response—pairing artists randomly for two-week digital exchanges—became proof that meaningful collaboration doesn’t require institutional permission. No fees. No applications. No gatekeepers. Just artists supporting artists through creative exchange. \n\n\nTwenty rounds later\, the model has facilitated lasting partnerships\, gallery exhibitions\, and creative community across cultural and geographic boundaries. Artists like Jody Zellen and Lorraine Bubar met through Call and Response and went on to exhibit at Proxy Gallery. \n\n\nOthers discovered new techniques\, explored different media\, found creative community during isolation. \n\n\nThis exhibition at Startup Art Fair marks the next evolution: collaboration that exists in three dimensions\, works you can hold in your hands\, partnerships that produced physical objects through radical trust. \n\n\nFOLLOW THE PROJECT \n\nInstagram: @callandresponseart Facebook: Call and Response Email: callandresponseart@gmail.com\n\n\nWant to bring Call and Response to your organization? We’re developing curriculum and training for institutions interested in facilitating collaborative programs.\n\n\nABOUT SHOEBOX ARTS \n\n\nShoebox Arts connects artists to opportunities and builds creative community through programs like Call and Response and Perceive Me. Operating from the Brewery Arts Complex in Los Angeles\, we eliminate barriers to meaningful artistic exchange. \n\nInstagram: @shoeboxarts.la Email: shoeboxartsla@gmail.com\nCome see what happens when 190 artists trust the process across continents.\n\n\nKristine Schomaker Shoebox Arts\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: 'Common Threads: The Fabric of our Community' at Studio ACE Gallery
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘Common Threads: The Fabric of our Community’\n\n\n\nOPENING: Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 from 5 PM to 7 PM\nat\nStudio ACE Gallery\n\n\n\n\nStudio ACE Gallery presents: “Common Threads: The Fabric of Our Community\,” a group exhibition celebrating the rich\, expressive world of textiles and fiber arts. \nShowing\, “FINALLY”\, 48 x 19.5″\, canvas\, lace\, hemp cord\, sewing thread\n\nTextiles—among the oldest and most universal artistic mediums—carry stories in every stitch. Woven\, sewn\, dyed\, layered\, felted\, quilted\, knotted\, or repurposed\, fiber-based materials offer a tactile language that speaks to memory\, identity\, resilience\, and cultural tradition. From the intimate textures of handwork to bold contemporary experiments with fabric\, thread\, and mixed media\, textile art reminds us that creativity is something we all touch\, wear\, and share. \nThis exhibition presents works that explore connection—connections between people\, cultures\, materials\, and ideas. We welcome pieces that honor traditional craft\, push the boundaries of fiber as a modern art form\, or reimagine textiles in unexpected ways. Whether your work is deeply personal\, abstract\, conceptual\, or rooted in community stories\, we want to hear your voice. Join us as we bring together the diverse perspectives that make up the fabric of our community. \n“Common Threads: The Fabric of Our Community” will be on view at ACE Gallery (inside Studio ACE) from Saturday\, February 21\, through Friday\, March 27\, 2026\, with an opening reception celebration taking place on Saturday\, February 21\, from 5-7 p.m. Please view exhibited works HERE!\nCheck out Studio ACE on Facebook / Instagram \n\n\n\nEvent Supported By\nStudio ACE\n7607305203\ninfo@studioace.org\nhttps://www.studioace.org/\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:As part of presented by Craft in America\, \nTextile Arts LA presents:\nHandwork\, The Material Intelligence of Touch!\n\nAt the Marks Center\, College of the Desert.\nThe exhibit brings together artists from Textile Arts LA whose work centers the hand as both method and metaphor. Inspired by artist Ann Hamilton’s concept of the “sewing hand”—the idea that making by hand is a way of knowing—we explore how tactile engagement with material connects body to mind\, individual to community\, and past to present.\nPlease VIEW THE SHOW HERE \nI am delighted to participate with two works included:\n\n“Communion“\, 2025\, 10.5 x 21.5 x 8.5” (dimensions variable)\, wood\, hemp/assorted cord\, acrylic paint \n\n“La Forêt I“\, 2024\, 62 x 17 x 1”\, canvas\, acrylic paint\, hemp/jute/cotton cord

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: “Sanctuary” / Know Safe Space at 18th Street Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Debra Disman: “Sanctuary” / Know Safe Space\n\n\n\n\nNovember 14\, 2025 – January 2\, 2026\n\n\n\n\n18th Street Arts Center\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Sanctuary” / Know Safe Space will expand upon Disman’s 2023 piece\, K no W Safe Place with the addition of a hanging roof surrounded by an inverted “forest” of knotted colored cords hung from the ceiling in various arrangements allowing pathways to the suspended black sanctuary space. The installation will grow and change over time with the addition of these hanging elements. \nSanctuary: Know Safe Space\, 2025\, 10′ x 48″ x 48″\, canvas\, netting\, burlap\, cord\, lace\, ribbon\, paint\, wood\n \nSanctuary: Know Safe Space\, 2025\, 10′ x 48″ x 48″\, canvas\, netting\, burlap\, cord\, lace\, ribbon\, paint\, wood\nThis installation draws upon Disman’s ongoing study of the groundbreaking practices of artists Charlotte Salomon and Eva Hesse using artmaking to transcend trauma; research into sanctuary movements and spaces and the use of textiles within these; exploration of the“quipu/khipu”\, a record-keeping device made of knotted cords of assorted colors used in various cultures in the central Andes of South America; and investigation into the work of artists who have used fiber-based materials to create environments\, structures and shelters including Do Ho Suh\, Chiharu Shiota and Tracey Emin. \nDisman will also engage in dialogue with others inside the Sanctuary space\, informally videotaping these participants’ response to the installation and their immersion in it\, as well as offering “interviewees’ the opportunity to share about their own practices\, projects and practices\, especially as they relate to 18th Street Arts Center. These short-form videos will serve as an informal archive of our present moment\, the role of the creative process in it\, and the support and sanctuary 18th Street Arts Center is offering to the community by allowing us to Know Safe Space. \nAnyone wishing to be interviewed/dialogue in the Sanctuary can contact should contact Debra at debra@artifactorystudio.com \nAbout the artist \n \nDebra Disman is a Los Angeles-based artist known for her work inspired by the book\, which traverses textiles\, installation\, sculpture and performance to push the familiar into forms that arrest and baffle\, while simultaneously offering places of contemplation and solace. SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "The California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers"
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to have three works in:\n“The California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers”\nOpening at the Long Beach Museum of Art October 4\, 2025 and running through January 4\, 2026!\n\n\n\n\nThe California Effect: New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers\n\n\n\n\nOctober 4\, 2025 – March 8\, 2026 \nThe California Effect—New Books from the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is rich in both artists and bookworks. There are 29 artists exhibiting 54 books\, boxes\, and broadsides. Some are in limited editions and others are one-of-a-kind. All are handmade individually with handmade and fine papers\, cloth\, thread\, glue\, inks\, and paint. What exactly is the California effect? More precisely\, what is the effect on the many of us who live\, work\, and visit here? The misty mornings and baking hot afternoons? The endless coastline\, chill forests or dry desert arroyos? Each of us has an answer\, seen in the books we make\, in our tastes and inspirations. We turn to making books: printing them\, binding them\, reinventing them\, turning them into art—making books as art. \nThe California Chapter is one of ten chapters\, revealing the national reach and scope of the Guild and its dedication to promoting interest and awareness in the tradition of book and paper arts. The members include hand bookbinders\, design binders\, conservators\, calligraphers\, makers of artist books\, fine press printers and papermakers. A fully illustrated catalogue with information about each artwork and biographical information about each artist is available to order. \nThe California Effect exhibition and related programming are graciously supported by The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation\, the Pasadena Art Alliance\, and the Bess J. Hodges Foundation \n\nYou can order the beautiful catalogue designed by artist Rebecca Chamlee of Pie in the Sky Press HERE and HERE\n\nAnd… while you are there\, don’t miss:\nVoice of the Artist: Artist Books from the Permanent Collection \n\n\n\nOctober 4\, 2025 – March 8\, 2026 \nThroughout its 75-year history\, the Museum has presented contemporary art in all media\, including the book arts. In 1983\, the Museum organized At Home\, an exhibition that included artists’ books by women created between 1970 and 1983. In 2009\, Novel Constructions—Artists Create Monumental Books explored books as sculptural installations and included works by Genie Shenk and Carol Shaw-Sutton\, both of whom are represented in the Ocean View Gallery. In 2019\, the Museum presented The Artful Book of the California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers\, and it continues this tradition with The California Effect. \nVoice of the Artist highlights a selection of artists’ books from the Museum’s permanent collection. It touches on the history of the medium\, from the livre d’artiste exemplified by Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso\, to contemporary offset-printed codex forms such as Barbara Kruger’s My Pretty Pony. Artists continue to expand the definition of the book through unconventional materials\, like the tar paper in Genie Shenk’s Ring or the carved wood of Suvan Geer’s Author\, Author? Unstill Poetry. The exhibition features a variety of forms\, including traditional codex forms\, accordion books\, and a pop-up sculpture by Paul Johnson. The Museum gratefully acknowledges the generous support of a donor-collector Museum member\, who anonymously provided both the exhibition and the video revealing more of the books’ interiors. \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nLong Beach Museum of Art\n2300 E Ocean Blvd.\n\n\n\n\n\nMember & VIP Opening Reception: 5-7 pm\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission Opening Reception: 7-9 pm

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: EMBRACING THE CRAFT at CORE Art Space
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in \nFiber Art: Embracing the Craft\nSeptember 12 – 28\, 2025\nat\n\n\n\n\n\nFri: 5p – 9p\, Sat: 12p – 5p\, Sun: 12p – 5p\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCore Art Space — 6501 W.Colfax Avenue\, Lakewood\, CO 80214\n\n\n\n\nLong disparaged in the art world as mere “craft\,” fiber art has been enjoying something of a renaissance in the last few years. Artists working with fabric and other fibers\, such as Bisa Butler and Alexandra Kehayoglou\, have gained international recognition\, and the New York Times has declared that “fiber art is finally being taken seriously.” We say\, it’s about time! What’s not to love about the beauty\, versatility\, and luxuriousness of fiber media? \nIn this show\, Core Art Space celebrates the skill\, dedication\, and ingenuity required to make beautiful art out of fiber materials. We celebrate weavings\, quilts\, embroideries\, beadwork\, fiber sculptures\, or wearables—all artwork using a foundation of fiber materials and processes (including fabric\, yarn\, thread\, beads\, roving\, rope\, etc.; stitching\, weaving\, felting\, quilting\, knotting\, wrapping\, lacemaking\, etc.) is eligible. Both traditional and experimental forms and techniques included. \nJuror\nFiber and mixed media artist Susan Dillon explores the physical manifestation of emotions and memories using fabric\, thread\, yarn\, bones and found objects. She creates environments filled with life forms\, some familiar and some more otherworldly\, which are encrusting surfaces & niches and colonizing their surroundings. This versatile and sculptural book requires no hole punching or sewing\, making it perfect for artists of all skill levels. \n\n\nYou’ll learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nCreate the foundational folded and glued structure \n\n\nDisplay your book in multiple creative ways \n\n\nTransform the sculptural form into a familiar codex format \n\n\nExplore various presentation methods and artistic possibilities  \n\n\n\n\nDebra will also share examples from her own extensive body of work\, showing how she has used this structure to create numerous compelling book pieces. \n\n\nWhat You Need\n\n\nThe beauty of this workshop is its accessibility—you can literally create this structure using just 4 pieces of standard 8.5 x 11″ copier paper! However\, for the best results\, Debra recommends having these materials on hand: \n\n\nEssential Tools\n\n\n\n\nScissors (or just use folding and tearing techniques!) \n\n\nGlue stick \n\n\nPencil \n\n\nBone folder (optional—you can use your glue stick as a folding tool) \n\n\n\n\nRecommended Materials\n\n\n\n\nAccordion Spine: One 11 x 17″ tag board or cardstock sheet \n\n\nCovers: Two 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces of railroad board or similar cardboard \n\n\nPages: Three 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces (or slightly smaller at 5.25″ for easier handling) \n\n\n\n\nChoose your own colors and get creative with your material choices! \n\n\nOptional Enhancement Materials\n\n\n\n\nScrap paper and easy-to-glue fabric \n\n\nWashi tape\, decorative tapes\, stickers\, ribbon \n\n\nEphemera: old letters\, cards\, ticket stubs\, journal pages\, and other meaningful materials \n\n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop?\n\n\nThe “Folded Fan” structure is incredibly versatile and forgiving\, making it an ideal entry point for new bookmakers while offering endless creative possibilities for experienced artists. Whether you’re interested in creating artist books\, journals\, display pieces\, or sculptural works\, this foundational technique will open up new avenues for your artistic expression. \n\n\nReady to Join?\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn from Debra Disman and connect with fellow artists in our supportive online community. Spaces are limited\, so register today! \n\n\nSign up here using our Google form \n\n\nRemember: You’ll receive your Zoom link the day before the workshop\, so keep an eye on your inbox! \n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what beautiful books you’ll create. SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: BRAND 53: National Juried Show of Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to have my artists’ book\, “THIN ICE” made in collaboration with artist Luciana Abait\, shown in Brand 53: Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper   \n\n\nOpening Date: July 19\, 2025  \n\n\nThe Associates of Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale\, California host its 53rd Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper this summer. All works in the show will be on view in the beautiful Brand Library’s Gallery and in both printed and online exhibition catalogs.  \nThis year’s juror\, Sigrid Burton\, considers color and drawing as the foundation of her artistic practice and is noted for her works in oil on canvas or linen and mixed media on paper. She explores the natural world both literally and figuratively\, with the intention of making light and depth tangible and visible on a two-dimensional picture plane. Burton captures the phenomenological occurrence of reflection and refraction of light\, in particular\, water\, sky and deep space. Her studies of the art of the Indian subcontinent and its ancient and sophisticated aesthetic theory have influenced her thinking that the importance of a work of art is the response that the work evokes from the viewer. Within this context\, color is understood to have great expressive and communicative power. \nThe Brand Associates will be offering a printed exhibition catalog for purchase at Brand Library & Art Center.\nA digital version of the catalog is also available to download for free. \nView the Online CATALOG HERE!\nPlease see a video of show HERE with a talk by Juror Sigrid Burton\n
