SUMMARY:Folded Fan Sculptural Artists’ Book: A Vehicle for Imagination\, Experimentation\, and Play
DESCRIPTION:The California Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers presents: \nA workshop led by Debra Disman\nSaturday\, June 5\, 2021\n1:00 – 4:00 pm\, Pacific Time\nPresented live via Zoom \nThe “Folded Fan Book\,” Debra Disman’s personal name for this fun and versatile book structure\, is comprised of\nan accordion spine\, two covers\, and full size pages which “fan out” when the book is opened.\nThis structure can be treated as a traditional codex or built into a sculptural form limited only by the \ningenuity\, creativity\, and innovation of the maker. \nStudents will gather their own materials based on the supplies list provided and determine the size and content of their books\,\ninspired by examples of different ways this structure can be developed\, reimagined\, and used. \nWe will spend the first part of the workshop creating the basic structure\, then take off into unexplored territory\nwhere students can utilize their chosen materials to transform their books into personal explorations of their own histories\nor potential futures. Will YOUR BOOK become a container of memory\, visualization of an intention\, a container of dreams\, an excavated artifact?\nWhatever participants choose to create\, this book can become a vehicle for imagination\, experimentation\, and play. \nMaterials: Participants will supply and source tools and materials. The use of existing materials in your living/work space is encouraged.\nA list of supplies will be sent one month before the workshop. The Zoom link will be sent the week of the workshop. \nSkill Level: Open to all levels of experience \nRegistration: $50.00 USD for GBW members\,\n$60.00 USD for non-members.\nPlease register by May 15\, 2021. The workshop will not be recorded.\nThere is a cancellation fee of 10% of the registration fee up to 30 days before the workshop. No refunds are given for\ncancellations made within 30 days prior to the workshop. Registrations may not be shared and are non-transferable. \nPlease direct questions to\ncalifornia@guildofbookworkers.org. \nDebra Disman is a Los Angeles-based artist working \nprimarily in the form of the book\, both as a solo \npractitioner and in the public sphere of community \nengagement. She creates work and projects which \npush the boundaries of the book into new forms and \nmaterials. Her work is shown in museums\, galleries\, \nuniversities\, and libraries across the U.S.\ndebradisman.com\nInstagram

SUMMARY:Bookmaking with Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Recovery Justice: Being Well\n“Being Well” is what we seek together as neighbors\, and recalls one of the central guiding principles of the City of Santa Monica\, the notion of “wellbeing” as key to civic health. Recovery Justice: Being Well\, aims to highlight the recent circumstances that have evolved during the pandemic (racial justice demonstrations and destruction\, as well as social discontent and general disconnection) into a series of self-organized artist projects that merges the exterior and interior public spaces of City of Santa Monica property. 18th Street Airport Campus at Santa Monica Municipal Airport will be the site where artists reimagine the city and beyond in the midst of complex social unrest globally. Recovery Justice will recuperate through various means the digital and physical footprints left in a city that struggles to reclaim the seemingly peaceful environment it once had. Artists will develop a palette for making and sharing artworks responding to the street experience in safe\, healing and expressive modes. This porous series is a point of departure to reconcile and redefine the concept of justice.  \nWE RISE PROJECTS: THIS MAY\nFor the We Rise series of projects related to Recovery Justice: Being Well\, 18th Street Arts Center will produce a series of artist-led workshops and civic engagement projects addressing mental health for youth and for families in Spanish and English. \nARTS LEARNING LAB @ HOME: CREATIVE SELF-COMPASSION \nThis May\, we are thrilled to present three new Arts Learning Lab @ Home art-making workshops for families all around wellbeing and self-compassion. May is Mental Health Awareness month\, and taking time for creativity together with loved ones is a key part of self-care in these uncertain times. We are partnering with WE RISE LA (https://werise.la/) to bring these moments for creative growth to you\, centered around the theme of wellbeing as we navigate coming out of a pandemic and transitioning to new routines together. \nWe will be providing ALL@HOME Art Kits with materials for each workshop that will be available for pick up from 1639 18th Street\, Santa Monica\, for those that live in the LA Metro area\, but all materials will also be easily found at home or at a local supply store. More information on Art Kit pick-up will be provided once you register for a workshop. Supplies are limited and are first come\, first serve. All of the virtual workshops will be presented on Zoom\, and interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish. \nMay 15\, 2021 at 11 AM- 12:30 PM [Virtual: Zoom] Bookmaking with Self-Compassion | Debra Disman \n\nDebra Disman\, Narrow Bridge\, (inside) 2016\, 5.5 x 16 x 3.5 inches\, Artists’ Book/Mixed Media (board\, paper\, fabric\, linen thread).\nMake an artist book celebrating your own creative growth!!!\nJoin 18th Street Arts Center artist in residence\, Debra Disman and discover how to create the beautiful\, fun and versatile Flower Fold book into which you can write or paste wishes\, hopes\, prayers and dreams\, make into a chain to hang in your home\, or give as a gift. Explore what the pandemic has meant to you while learning new skills and creating a unique expression of renewal and rebirth during the spring season.

SUMMARY:CELEBRATING THE LEGACY OF SANTA MONICA BLACK COMMUNITY LEADER THELMA TERRY FOR WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
DESCRIPTION:IMAGE: The Terryettes Drill Team\, formed by Mrs. Thelma Terry. Photo courtesy of the Quinn Research Center and The Terryettes. \nJoin us for a unique celebration\, and community art project from noon to 1PM\nCELEBRATING\nThelma Terry: Athlete\, Educator\, and Community Leader\nA Women’s History Month Celebration\nSaturday\, March 7\, 2020 | 10 AM – 1 PM\nVirginia Avenue Park\, Thelma Terry Building\n2200 Virginia Ave\, Santa Monica \n“In observance of Women’s History Month\, Virginia Avenue Park\, 18th Street Arts Center\, and the Quinn Research Center are teaming up to celebrate the life and work of Thelma Terry\, a community leader with a lasting legacy around teen recreation\, athletics\, and arts education in the Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica. Through her life’s work\, Thelma Terry touched so many in the community\, but has very little presence online or in the history books. Through the efforts of Quinn Research Center\, researcher Sabrina Fields\, Virginia Avenue Park\, and 18th Street Arts Center\, Terry will finally have a Wikipedia page that matches her profound influence in the community. The Quinn Research Center provided photos and historical information on Thelma Terry from their archives for this page\, and 18th Street Arts Center was able to provide some first-hand oral history accounts from their culturemapping90404.org project. Through art-making\, sharing stories\, local history presentations\, food\, and more\, the community will celebrate Thelma Terry’s legacy at the Thelma Terry Center on Saturday March 7\, 2020 from 10am-1pm. \nNestled in Santa Monica’s Pico neighborhood\, the Thelma Terry building is a recreation facility right in the heart of Virginia Avenue Park. The building is used primarily for community gathering activities: everything from baile folklorico rehearsals to rent control information sessions. Although the essence of these activities are in line with the legacy of Thelma Terry\, only a few know about her influence in the Westside\, specifically in Venice and Santa Monica. \nThe event on March 7th will feature a community art-making activity with Debra Disman\, a presentation from Art+Feminism’s West Coast rep Stacey Allan\, memories of Mrs. Terry from her contemporaries and students\, and a call for more Santa Monicans to get involved in future Wikipedia-thons to record and write the histories of underrecognized women leaders of color in this community. For information or to get involved in a future Santa Monica-focused Wikipedia-thon\, please email sbyank@18thstreet.org.” \nRead FULL Press Release! \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\,
