DESCRIPTION:Our kick-off “We Write the Book” 2025 workshop at the Northridge Library is happening Saturday September 13th!\nJOIN US!\n\n\nI am thrilled to “kick-off” my “We Write The Book”  Neighborhood Engagement Artist Residency (NEAR)artist residency at the Northridge Public Library supported by the  Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs .\nWe will be learning the accordion fold as well as one and two-cut pop-ups and how to reinforce our books with “double covers”. All ages and levels of experience welcome!\nJOIN US!\nI am honored to be serving the City of Los Angeles again through the DCA.

This versatile and sculptural book requires no hole punching or sewing\, making it perfect for artists of all skill levels. \n\n\nYou’ll learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nCreate the foundational folded and glued structure \n\n\nDisplay your book in multiple creative ways \n\n\nTransform the sculptural form into a familiar codex format \n\n\nExplore various presentation methods and artistic possibilities  \n\n\n\n\nDebra will also share examples from her own extensive body of work\, showing how she has used this structure to create numerous compelling book pieces. \n\n\nWhat You Need\n\n\nThe beauty of this workshop is its accessibility—you can literally create this structure using just 4 pieces of standard 8.5 x 11″ copier paper! However\, for the best results\, Debra recommends having these materials on hand: \n\n\nEssential Tools\n\n\n\n\nScissors (or just use folding and tearing techniques!) \n\n\nGlue stick \n\n\nPencil \n\n\nBone folder (optional—you can use your glue stick as a folding tool) \n\n\n\n\nRecommended Materials\n\n\n\n\nAccordion Spine: One 11 x 17″ tag board or cardstock sheet \n\n\nCovers: Two 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces of railroad board or similar cardboard \n\n\nPages: Three 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces (or slightly smaller at 5.25″ for easier handling) \n\n\n\n\nChoose your own colors and get creative with your material choices! \n\n\nOptional Enhancement Materials\n\n\n\n\nScrap paper and easy-to-glue fabric \n\n\nWashi tape\, decorative tapes\, stickers\, ribbon \n\n\nEphemera: old letters\, cards\, ticket stubs\, journal pages\, and other meaningful materials \n\n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop?\n\n\nThe “Folded Fan” structure is incredibly versatile and forgiving\, making it an ideal entry point for new bookmakers while offering endless creative possibilities for experienced artists.
