SUMMARY:Online Book Making Workshop: Learn the "Folded Fan" Structure with Debra Disman
DESCRIPTION:DEBRA DISMAN AND SHOEBOX ARTS PRESENT:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE Online Book Making Workshop: Learn the “Folded Fan” Structure with Debra Disman!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalling all artists! Join us for an exciting FREE online bookmaking workshop where you’ll learn to create beautiful\, versatile books using the innovative “Folded Fan” structure \n\n\nWorkshop Details:\n\n\nWhat: Making Books Together: The “Folded Fan” Bookmaking Structure \n\n\nWhen: August 27th at 11am PST \n\nInstructor Debra Disman\nHost: Shoebox Arts\n\nFormat: Live online workshop via Zoom \n\n\nCost: Completely FREE for all artists \n\n\nRegistration: Sign up using our Google form (link below) \n\n\nZoom Access: Participants will receive the Zoom link one day before the workshop \n\n\nWhat You’ll Learn\n\n\nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll discover the joy of creating the “Folded Fan” bookmaking structure—Debra’s own innovative take on the traditional Flag Book form. This versatile and sculptural book requires no hole punching or sewing\, making it perfect for artists of all skill levels. \n\n\nYou’ll learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nCreate the foundational folded and glued structure \n\n\nDisplay your book in multiple creative ways \n\n\nTransform the sculptural form into a familiar codex format \n\n\nExplore various presentation methods and artistic possibilities  \n\n\n\n\nDebra will also share examples from her own extensive body of work\, showing how she has used this structure to create numerous compelling book pieces. \n\n\nWhat You Need\n\n\nThe beauty of this workshop is its accessibility—you can literally create this structure using just 4 pieces of standard 8.5 x 11″ copier paper! However\, for the best results\, Debra recommends having these materials on hand: \n\n\nEssential Tools\n\n\n\n\nScissors (or just use folding and tearing techniques!) \n\n\nGlue stick \n\n\nPencil \n\n\nBone folder (optional—you can use your glue stick as a folding tool) \n\n\n\n\nRecommended Materials\n\n\n\n\nAccordion Spine: One 11 x 17″ tag board or cardstock sheet \n\n\nCovers: Two 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces of railroad board or similar cardboard \n\n\nPages: Three 8.5 x 5.5″ pieces (or slightly smaller at 5.25″ for easier handling) \n\n\n\n\nChoose your own colors and get creative with your material choices! \n\n\nOptional Enhancement Materials\n\n\n\n\nScrap paper and easy-to-glue fabric \n\n\nWashi tape\, decorative tapes\, stickers\, ribbon \n\n\nEphemera: old letters\, cards\, ticket stubs\, journal pages\, and other meaningful materials \n\n\n\n\nWhy This Workshop?\n\n\nThe “Folded Fan” structure is incredibly versatile and forgiving\, making it an ideal entry point for new bookmakers while offering endless creative possibilities for experienced artists. Whether you’re interested in creating artist books\, journals\, display pieces\, or sculptural works\, this foundational technique will open up new avenues for your artistic expression. \n\n\nReady to Join?\n\n\nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn from Debra Disman and connect with fellow artists in our supportive online community. Spaces are limited\, so register today! \n\n\nSign up here using our Google form \n\n\nRemember: You’ll receive your Zoom link the day before the workshop\, so keep an eye on your inbox! \n\n\nWe can’t wait to see what beautiful books you’ll create. Happy making \n\n\nQuestions about the workshop? Feel free to reach out to Shoebox Arts for more information. shoeboxartsla@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:EXHIBITIONISTA: "DWELLINGS: An Exhibition of Inhabited Spaces" at ARTLINK
DESCRIPTION:I am thrilled to participate in the exhibition: “DWELLINGS: An Exhibition of Inhabited Spaces” at ARTLINK\, at the Auer Center for Arts and Culture\, Fort Wayne\, Indiana. I love to get my work involved in events and shows all across the country\, in areas not considered major art centers and off the edges of the US. I find the commitment and caliber of shows\, curators/jurors\, artists and work to be audacious and  inspiring on all fronts. \n“For the exhibition DWELLINGS\, juried by Steve Garst\,  Artlink invited artists to submit works of any media that involve homes\, shelters\, forts\, nests\, burrows\, or any other forms of inhabited space used by humans or non-humans. Where a creature lays its head can be a place of refuge\, sustenance\, and identity.  They are cauldrons of growth\, filled with love\, hurt\, anger\, learning\, and memory.  Often\, homes are constructed and\, in turn\, end up constructing the lives of those who dwell within them\, for better or worse.  Artlink is excited to offer an exhibition exploring the variety of human and non-human places that serve as home\, in all its numerous manifestations.”  \nI am showing “Window Treatment”\n\nWindow Treatment\,  2018\, 13 x 38 x 9.25″\, book board/file folders/file cards/hemp cord\, wax\n \n

But the future starts now—and we are stronger together. Join us for the return of the Mutual Appreciation Society event—MAS Attack! This one-night-only exhibition invites all artists to share work that reflects these turbulent times\, whether political\, emotional\, or personal. Art that speaks to where we are\, and where we are headed. This is an opportunity to show that community counts\, and that we are not alone. \nHow to Participate\nNo registration or application is required! Artists are invited to drop off their work at TAM from Tuesday\, December 10th to Friday\, December 13th\, 10am-4pm. The opening reception will be Friday\, December 13th\, 6-9pm. At 9pm\, artists can take their work home with them. \nWhat’s at stake?\nWith recent tensions and the aftermath of a divisive election\, many artists are wondering what comes next. We need to reinforce our sense of community—so we can replace grief\, anger\, and anxiety with hope\, resilience\, and strength. MAS Attack is about showing up\, sharing art\, and reminding each other that we are in this together. We invite all forms of art\, all styles\, and all voices. Your voice matters. \nThis is just the beginning. Small steps\, but important ones. Let’s come together\, renew our bonds\, and support each other. She is fascinated by the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of the physical world. Since 2018\, she has been working on an international project about vulnerable wetlands and climate change.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiana Taylor works across painting\, textiles and print media\, exploring notions of time\, loss and ruin in visual culture.
